7 Truths

Media is a part of every American’s life.  Whether you are walking down the road, getting coffee, or making breakfast, media is constantly surrounding us.  The evolving of internet, cell phones, and other technology has made it even easier for us to keep up on the latest.  In Chapter one under truth one it says, “The media are essential components of our lives.”  This is so true.
For advertisement, media is especially important.  How many of us would think to buy simple cloth shoes, in various colors, that are comfortable, with the name Tom on them?  This new fad, TOM’s shoes are everywhere.  If you open a magazine, there they are, promising to give a pair of shoes to a child in need with every purchase.  If you have not heard of these shoes I’ll simply say, they are the newest and hottest fad.
How about the fact that I can watch the news in the morning while I get ready, read the news in the paper as I get to work, surf the internet for news while at work, and check for news updates on my phone instantaneously throughout the day.
Media is an essential part of our everyday lives.  From phones to computers we have a wealth of information at our finger tips.  Are we displaying and using media in the most effective way we can?

Another truth that is written about in chapter one is, “New media are always scary.”  Think about some of the shows when you or your parents were growing up.  I Love Lucy, Nots Landing, Dallas, Andy Griffith, and Three Stooges seem so simple and fun.  Your children could come in and watch these shows with mom and dad and there would be nothing wrong.  They may have not thought that back then.
There were many shows that I was not allowed to watch when I was a child because of the underlying sarcasm, disrespect to parents, and language.  When I look back, I am glad that my parents stuck to their morals, but I now see how bad things are getting.  It seems like the bar is being lowered in the essence of keeping things “Family Friendly.”
Where is the media headed?  All we know is that if it continues to progress we will either have to be ok subjecting our children to these circumstances or protect better.
